Galaxy Hut

I am in the process of moving to Arlington, Virginia (the other side of the river) from living in downtown D.C. for two-and-a-half years. As I prepare to make the full plunge into Virginia lifestyle, I've been exploring new restaurants/cafes/shops.

Recently I went to the retro bar/diner place called Galaxy Hut in the Clarendon area of Arlington. It's very unassuming from the outside and the dark interior probably isn't a place you'd bring your parents. To be honest, it's actually a bit of a dive bar. But it's super laid back, boasts some fun decorations (including the arcade table tops) and is a great place to meet friends. Best of all, their vegan and vegetarian options are incredible!

As a vegetarian for 23 years, I certainly appreciate when I can walk into a cafe/restaurant and don't have to ask questions about the ingredients for a dish. Their menu is typical American bar food --fries, burgers, cheesesteak, chili and hot dogs. However, everything can either be vegan or meat. For those of you who are especially conscious about how your food is cooked, Galaxy Hut mentions on the menu that their fryer is completely vegan and uses a peanut and soybean oil blend.

I decided to try the vegan seitan cheesesteak with vegan cheese, in part because I've never had a veggie-friendly version of a cheesesteak. It was absolutely delicious! Not only was it filling but it was good for my wallet too, only $8.50 (plus $1 for the vegan cheese substitute).

It's not every day that I can walk into a bar and order pretty much whatever I like from the menu. That in and of itself gets two thumbs up! Check out their menu and see for yourself the awesome veggie-friendly menu. I can't wait to go back and try chili and potato skins.
