Kimball's is a unique watering hole for locals and visitors alike. The Jaffrey, New Hampshire farm is one of four Kimball locations. The other three locations are in Massachusetts with its flagship store in Westford. The farmhouse in Westford has been there since 1939, offers 40 different ice cream flavors, mini-golf and bumper boats. It was voted "Best Ice Cream Stand in Massachusetts" in 2010 by USA Today.
While the Jaffrey location doesn't have mini-golf or bumper boats, it has enough charm to keep bringing back customers year after year. It's located on the old Silver Ranch farm next to the municipal airport. It also has a great view of the world's second most climbed mountain in the world: Mount Monadnock.
It's rare to visit the Jaffrey farm on a hot summer night and not find yourself waiting in line. But the wait is worth it! If you're feeling too crammed at the farmhouse, you can walk up the hill behind Kimball's and head to the municipal airport for an up close view of some small scenic airplanes.
Silver Ranch Airport owners Lee and Harvey Sawyer are welcoming folks and I've never been turned away while enjoying my ice cream while watching the planes land on the runway.
If you're feeling adventurous and want to experience a little bit more than just ice cream, check out their seafood and grill menu. As a vegetarian, I can't speak to the seafood or meat items on the menu, but their veggie burger is great and their waffle fries are probably the best I've ever had. A perfect dinner for me (although not the healthiest) is a side order of waffle fries and ice cream. Simply bliss!
My favorite flavor ice cream (which they don't offer until later in the season) is pumpkin. But I'll never turn down a peanut butter or moose tracks flavored ice cream either.
Be careful though when choosing your ice cream size. A large is more than enough for two people. I typically go with the more conservative "kiddie" size, which is quite filling.
Starting in June through September, every Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. the Monadnock Oldies Car Club hosts "Cruise Night" where folks with antique and unique cars are encouraged to show off their beauties.
If you happen to find yourself in the Monadnock region region of New Hampshire this summer, be sure to stop by Kimball's Farm for some truly mouthwatering ice cream. You'll be glad you did!
Just writing this post is making me crave Kimball Ice Cream. I can't wait to get back home!
