It's literally just lentils, rice and onions and a dash of cumin and allspice. Sounds pretty boring, but based on reviews of the humble dish, it sounds pretty awesome and I can't wait to try it. In the Middle-East it's known as a comfort food akin to mashed potatoes or mac n cheese here in the states.
Nora Chovanec of the website Abbott & West recently wrote about her first experience making Mujadara. Similar to her, as a vegetarian I'm surprised I've never heard of the dish.
Melissa Clark of The New York Times also recently wrote a post about a visit to a Lebanese restaurant where she tried the "dreamy incarnation of 1960s hippie cuisine." Melissa suggests a leafy salad or vegetables to accompany the dish. Nora made her dish with a lemon yogurt sauce and some cooked greens.
If you've tried it or made it before let me know what you think. Also let me know if you have any suggestions to add to the dish. I'll post something about my dish as soon as I make it!
