I am a peanut butter fanatic. I put it on just about everything: cereal, apples, crackers, rice, cookies, ice cream... I have a little spoonful of the salty madness nearly everyday. My family and I go through a jar of peanut butter every week the same way people go through a jug of milk. Being a vegetarian, peanut butter has become a staple in my diet because it not only tastes great but it is a great resource for energy and protein. I want to remind you that I typically only eat the healthy peanut butter, such as Teddy's. I like to eat the peanut butter that is just made from peanuts and salt, not the other brands that have hydrogenated oils and sugars.
I had a difficult time surviving when I spent a year abroad in the United Kingdom. The British do not fancy peanut butter at all. Yes, I did seek out a few stores that carried peanut butter but they were in small jars. Some looked a little dodgy and I didn't want to take my chances with some unheard of companies. When my parents came to visit last November they brought several jars of Teddy's with them. That held me over for quite a few months. I had another friend visit me in April and he brought two jars of Skippy. Life was great! I shared with my flatmates and friends the endless possibilities of peanut butter. For many of my friends, especially the British, they had never imagined spreading peanut butter on anything other than bread and jam. It was a bit of a "crazy" idea to use peanut butter beyond these boundaries.
I have posted a link to a story written in the Nashua Telegraph's "Feast" section. The story "Take peanut butter beyond the sandwich" has some great links to learn more about peanut butter and some recipes on how to experiment with it. I hope you enjoy! Happy peanut-buttering!
